Substitute Children's Librarian at Hornstulls Library
Stockholm – our capital city with millions of dreams, expectations, and ambitions. We work for everyone living here today and in the future. Now we are looking for you who want to think big, new, and differently with us – for the people of Stockholm.
Culture is an important part of Stockholm's nervous system and touches millions of people every year. At the Culture Administration, we work together to strengthen cultural life in Stockholm.
We have an open work climate where employees are very much involved in development. Join us in contributing to Stockholm's growth through culture!
Welcome to us
Hornstulls Library is one of three libraries in the Södermalm unit, which also includes Tranströmer Library, Luma Library, and Tellus Recreation Center Library.
The position as a substitute children's librarian is based at Hornstulls Library, but work at the unit's other libraries may occur.
In our operations, children and young people are a prioritized target group, which means they are the focus of all employees. You will be part of a workgroup with the unit's other children's librarians.
Hornstulls Library was previously a factory for shoe manufacturing and reopened after renovation in January 2025. The library is one of Stockholm's most visited libraries with high loan figures. It can sometimes be an intense workplace, and you need to enjoy working at a fast pace with varied tasks.
Stockholm City Library has about 400 employees and around 40 libraries in the city of Stockholm.
The libraries are to promote the development of the democratic society by contributing to knowledge dissemination and free opinion formation. Stockholm City Library plays a central role by offering all Stockholmers free access to culture, education, information, and community services.
We offer
Stockholm City Library is introducing a new library and logistics system this year. All staff will receive training in the new system. There are opportunities for further education, and as an employee, you have access to a learning portal with lectures and courses in various subjects. We offer wellness grants with discounts at various fitness facilities and free entry to the culture administration's own cultural institutions.
Your role
For this position, we are looking for a children's librarian who wants to work inspiringly in our children's department, preferably with new methods to reach people who do not usually visit the library. You have knowledge of current research on reading promotion methods for children and young people and are updated on current literature releases for the target group. Together with the library's children's librarians, you will plan and hold creative activities related to books and reading, 1-2 times a week for families and once a week for children aged 9-12 after school hours.
You have good pedagogical skills and enjoy meeting children of different ages. You participate in the planning and implementation of the library's program activities that run during the terms, with extra focus on programs during school holidays. Since the position is a substitute, much of the work involves managing and continuing with the already planned activities.
Providing good service and having a professional approach to our visitors in the library is a basic requirement. You can handle stressful situations, have a flexible working style, and can adapt to different tasks as needed.
You enjoy collaborating both internally and externally while taking your own initiatives and can work independently. You are a secure and stable person in the library space and a team player in the workgroup who contributes to a good working climate. Your tasks include staffing and participating in the work with the library's media management.
Your skills and experience
We are looking for someone who has:
- A degree in library and information science
- Experience working with reading promotion for the target group of children and young people
- Good digital skills and the ability to inspire and assist colleagues and visitors
- Knowledge of media and information literacy and the ability to convey it pedagogically to our users.
- Interest in working at a high-traffic library
We place great importance on personal qualities such as a communicative and pedagogical approach, initiative, creativity, good service, and good collaboration skills.
Meritorious
Once a month, the library is open extra hours for families with NPF (neuropsychiatric disabilities, such as autism spectrum disorders, ADHD, ADD, and similar diagnoses). It is advantageous if you have interest and experience working with accessibility for our prioritized target groups.
Good to know
Within Stockholm City Library, we use profile clothing in our operations with our visitors.
Working hours are scheduled, and evening and weekend shifts are included in the position. The work can periodically be physically demanding when lifting and moving media.
Stockholm City works with competence-based recruitment aimed at recognizing each person's skills and thus counteracting discrimination.
